Future-proof living space in growth corridor regions

The goal of the international FutureECOS project is to enhance the livability and attractiveness of six European regions from the perspective of future living. In Kanta-Häme, the project focuses particularly on developing housing. We examine and implement new digital, environmental, and social operating models and governance tools.

The regions involved in the project share a common characteristic: they are located outside national growth centres. These areas face similar challenges and opportunities; they may not currently appear attractive as residential areas, but they have untapped potential to increase their appeal in terms of housing and living space as they compete with metropolitan growth centres. Solutions to these challenges are sought by combining digital (smart planning, housing, and regions), environmental (sustainable living space), and social perspectives (quality housing, inclusion, health, and leisure). This approach can offer these regions better opportunities to attract new residents and improve quality of life.

FutureECOS involves project partners from four EU member countries and two EU candidate countries. The project emphasizes learning from other partners and regional stakeholders and sharing good practices. Each region develops a policy instrument of its choice within the project. The project supports the objectives of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative.

Häme Regional Council leads the project, and in Kanta-Häme, the work focuses on updating and developing the Sustainable Growth Häme 2022–2025 programme.
